The benefits of yoga are huge and span the physical, mental and spiritual, meaning there’s something in it for all of us

1. “On a purely physical level, practice of the asanas (postures) increases muscle tone and general vitality. It also rapidly improves circulation, co-ordination and balance. The practice not only promotes flexibility and skeleto-muscular  fitness, it also improves the function of the circulatory, nervous and endocrine systems – offering a truly holistic approach to health and well-being”. Iyengar Yoga Association of New Zealand

2. “The most fundamental practice in yoga is the deep, belly breath through the nose. The diaphragm is a large muscle located just below the lungs that ideally  should pull down the lungs during inspiration. This is why young children push  their stomach out when sleeping or exercising. Adults need to do the same. To  properly exhale, suck your belly button toward your spine to push the diaphragm  up and empty all the air from your lungs. This process also brings nitric  oxide—not nitrous oxide—from the back of the nose into your lungs, which dilates  arteries to bring more oxygen into your body”. Dr Oz

3. “Yoga can even help improve your relationship with your spouse, parents, friends or loved ones! A mind that is relaxed, happy and contented is better able to deal with sensitive relationship matters. Yoga and meditation work on keeping the mind happy and peaceful; benefit from the strengthened special bond you share with people close to you”. The Art of Living

4. “Insomniacs fell asleep 15 minutes faster and slept an hour longer each night after two months of doing a 45-minute series of yoga poses daily before bed. Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital speculate that regular practice helped people relax, making it easier to switch off. No trouble hitting the hay? Doing three weekly sessions at any time of the day may still help you doze more deeply, according to study authors. Sounder nights, brighter days”. Jorq Badura

5.  “Yoga is the practice of getting connected. However you choose to view your spirituality, when you practice yoga, you remember that we all are connected, here to help each other, and that we have so much potential when we are kind to others”. Tara Stiles, Yoga Cures

6. “Researchers have found that three sessions of the exercise a week can help fight off depression as it boosts levels of a chemical in the brain which is essential for a sound and relaxed mind”. Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent for The Telegraph

7. “Yoga helps clean blood of waste material (through lymphatic stimulation), and  trains us to loosen muscles and joints that are ignored in our day-to-day lives.  Routines like sun salutations get the blood flowing as we warm up and free our  body to experience the new stresses we will face. The practice also gets us to  handle the weight of our body more effectively, which builds bone and muscle  strength so we are more resilient to the frailty that afflicts many. This is why  power yoga practitioners have great bodies”. Dr Oz

8. “Improved immunity. Our system is a seamless blend of the body, mind and spirit. An irregularity in the body affects the mind and similarly unpleasantness or restlessness in the mind can manifest as an ailment in the body. Yoga poses massage organs and strengthen muscles; breathing techniques and meditation release stress and improve immunity”. The Art of Living

9. “You can amp up your desire and ensure an O-mazing time between the sheets by practicing daily asanas, a study from The Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests. The love connection: Yoga helps reduce anxiety, increase body awareness and even speed the release of hormones that rev arousal. All of that translates to a boost in libido, lubrication and ability to achieve orgasm, experts say. If you can’t squeeze in a daily session, two hours a week may make a difference. 10. “Creative juices start to flow when your body and mind begin to release mental blocks. Creativity doesn’t like to come out when there are stressors, whether from physical tension or mental cloudiness. When the stress melts away, creativity can come out to play”. Tara Stiles in Yoga Cures
