skiing, beach bumming & organic sunscreen

Its that time of year again to hit the slopes here in the Southern Hemisphere. Organic and Natural sunscreens vary in organic percentages from 30 -70%.

Make sure the brand you buy protects from both UVA / UVB rays and should be free from:

  • Retinyl Palmitate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Benzophenone-3
  • PABA

New Zealand and Australia have the highest levels of melanoma skin cancer in the world due to our depleted Ozone – a layer in earths atmosphere which absorbs most of the sun’s UV radiation – leaving us susceptible to a burn time that is roughly 12-15 minutes in the midday sun.

Living in what has been called the melanoma capital of the world, Aucklander’s face a 5.7% chance of developing skin cancer. Although the city’s climate encourages outdoor activities, in summer UV intensities are high due to the low ozone and clean air, and because the earth is closer to the sun. People with fair skin are particularly susceptible to being harmed by the sun’s radiation. Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand

The Cancer Society of NZ has figures documented in 2009 stating people “aged 25 to 44 years, melanoma was the leading cancer among males, while among females aged 25 to 44 years it was the second most common cancer. Melanoma was also the second most common cancer among females under 25 years. In 2009, there were 326 deaths (213 male and 113 female) from melanoma. In terms of gender, men have a higher overall incidence rate and thicker melanomas and, consequently, poorer outcomes than women. In 2009, the melanoma death rate among men was twice that of females”.

EWG has compiled a comprehensive list of Sunscreens that have made the grade for 2013 with one of my current faves COOLA Organic Sunscreen (70%+ organic ingredients) topping the list. For anyone hitting the slopes or the winter festivals in the Southern Hemisphere please remember to cover up with a sunscreen that has been independently tested or better yet from EWG’s list. Be safe and have fun, for anyone in the Northern Hemisphere chillin in the gorgeous summers try out these babies for size:

COOLA Classic Face SPF30 unscented/cucumber (more moisturising)
