I wrote this for anyone contemplating slightly more invasive and stronger treatments than you would normally have in the spa. It can seem a bit intimidating not knowing who to trust or fully understanding some of the procedures, just do your homework prior to committing to any extensive treatments.
The strongest tip I can give you is to be sure that the Medical Spa is occupied or owned by a Cosmetic Physician or Plastic Surgeon. This will ensure the integrity of the treatments and the Clinic, unfortunately this is big money now and a lot of people buying into these Medi Spa’s are businessmen that have no understanding of patient safety ~ money becomes the underlying motivation. Be sure to do your homework, have a chat to your aesthetician, nurse or doctor who will be performing your treatment and then relax …
Botox®: temporarily reduces the action of treated muscles. This relaxation of the muscles can result in softer lines or wrinkles in the overlying skin. Minute doses are injected directly into the muscles which cause facial lines by frequent habitual contraction. The treatment takes less than 15 minutes with results appearing gradually over the following few days and effect can last from 3-6 months depending on your metabolism.Botox can help soften and reduce:Frown lines,Crow’s feet, Forehead lines, Down-turned mouth
Hydradermabrasion: often called the lunchtime peel, I love this treatment! HMDA features a closed loop vacuum system to exfoliate and deliver topical serum onto the skin. As the vacuum source lifts the skin to be abraded through the diamond head tip, a vitamin and antioxidant serum is applied to be absorbed deep into the skin. I love this treatment for removing dead skin cells, fine lines and wrinkles, boosting hydration and stimulating collagen production. Skin definitely glows after this treatment
Dermal Fillers: dermal filler is used to restore volume to the skin and smooth away lines, wrinkles and can also used for lip enhancement. There are a large number of fillers on the market now, either fat, collagen or from materials such as stabilised hyaluronic acid a substance that occurs naturally in the skin. In the procedure the filler is selected and placed in the area i.e the lips. It is injected mid – deep dermis to fill and plump the area instantly, this injection can cause pain, redness and swelling. They come in varying viscosity to last varying lengths of time. Common filer include Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane.
Tattoo Removal: a safe high energy light beam, created by the Medlite-4 laser, is rapidly pulsed directly onto the tattoo, targeting the ink. This action shatters and fragments the ink into minute particles, which the body’s immune system then gradually absorbs and eliminates over a period of time. This internal process can be quite lengthy, depending on the amount and colours of the ink. It can vary between individuals, but in order to gain the greatest benefit, we allow a 6 week period between treatments. It is important to understand that you will need more than one treatment for total tattoo removal. Treatment time for smallish tattoos can take just a few minutes, larger vari-coloured ones take longer. Does it hurt, unfortunately YES, I’ve seen grown men aka ex gang members and truck drivers wince and swear their heads off.
Cosmetic Tattooing or Permanent Make-up: this specialty involves both cosmetic enhancement and reconstructive micro-pigmentation and is definitely not for the faint hearted! I would recommend sitting in on a session before you commit to choosing a specialist as remember the word permanent might not mean forever but does involve at least 2-10 years of your life. I have had a client who had blue lip-liner tattooed all over her lips as there was a ‘miscommunication’ in colours between client and specialist. I’m not making this up ! Permanent cosmetics refer to natural cosmetic pigments are tattooed into the skin to create long-term shape and colour. It is designed to enhance the natural features of the face or to camouflage scars and signs of surgery.
Mesotherapy: uses injections of pharmaceutical or natural (anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals and amino acid) ingredients into the dermis layer of the face and body. Mesotherapy can also be used around the eyes to reduce dark circles and puffiness, improve skin vitality and tone, improve circulation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Dermamelan: dermamelan is a concentrated mask and home care product which can be used by clients who require an aggressive treatment for those with prescription or hormone induced pigmentation. Works just as well for resurfacing the skin ageing, environmental damage or acne. TIn my experience Dermamelan is the treatment for hormone and sun induced melasma / chloasma. I have fantastic results with this product in people of varying ethnic backgrounds. Dermamelan works by inhibiting the pigment formation process it is compatible with all skin types, is effective in all types of Melasma especially deep-seated severe Melasma or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.It doesn’t contain Hydroquinone or TCA and is also beneficial for acne patients.
Peels: it is recommended that extractions, masks, peels and any repair be done by a trained professional There are so many facial peels to choose from including alpha hydroxyl acids and beta hydroxy acids, Jessner or Obagi. Medical strength chemical peels vary in intensity, depending on the percentage of active ingredients and different pH levels used. For example, you can achieve a medium peel of the skin after an average of 6 peels (one per week). This will improve with superficial to medium wrinkles, scars, pitting and stretch marks. Deeper peels remove deeper facial lines that comes with ageing, sun damage and smoking. After these procedures you must wear high protection sun screen.
Light Therapy: is a recent addition to skin therapy. The benefits of Light Therapy have been widely recognised in modern medicine, with treatments for skin cancer, psoriasis and even jaundice in young babies. Light therapy is recognised by many of the centres of excellence throughout the world as an important treatment for both oncological and non-oncological conditions including Melanoma skin cancer and acne. Light Therapy colours and their uses.
Laser Treatments: There are laser treatments available for many different conditions like removing acne, birthmarks, lesions, tattoos, wrinkles or bulging leg veins, sun damage, and for resurfacing the face. All laser treatments should be performed by a registered professional who adheres to the standards set by the Medical Council of the country they work in.
Face and Neck Tite™ is a treatment that gently melts and suctions excess fat in small to medium-sized areas. Gentle and deep heating will lead to contraction of the skin to re-contour the treatment area. They are both minimally invasive procedures performed under local anesthesia or light sedation. Post procedure, you can go home and resume your routine a few days later.. Wearing a compression garment is required. Face and neck Tite™ can be a good solution where there is saggy skin that requires tightening and contouring, without the need for fat removal.
Collagen Induction Therapy: Micro-needling, dermal roller Skin needling has also been referred to as Dermaroller ™, Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) ™ and Needle-dermabrasion. The results of Micro Needling are similar to those obtained with other ablative technologies. The advantage that Micro Needling has over these technologies is that the epidermis is not destroyed during the procedure which happens with ablative techniques such as Carbon Dioxide, Erbium, Fraxel & Pixel Lasers and Deep Chemical Peels, but still creates the same healing reaction within the skin. Specific uses of C.I.T helps to soften fine lines, tighten the skin and restore elasticity, thicken the skin, reduce scarring and help reduce pigmentation marks
Laser Hair Removal: virtually your entire body is covered with hair, but most of it is fine, pale and invisible to the naked eye. When darker, coarser hair appears in places which make you uncomfortable, it may be time to consider hair removal. Laser hair removal machines produce a large beam of high concentrated light, which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, heating up the hair and damaging the hair shaft and bulb, impeding its ability to re-grow. Laser hair removal does require multiple treatments, because the laser works best when hairs are in an early growth stage and not all hairs are in this phase at the same time and can treat Fitzpatrick Skin Types 1-6.
Photo Rejuvenation: Intense Pulse Light works by emitting a range of different wavelengths in each pulse of light, targeting areas in the skin which are different in colour to the surrounding tissue such as scars, age spots, freckles, some birthmarks and other areas of pigmented skin. Heating the collagen within the skin using I.P.L will improve complexion, skin texture and tension. A series of treatments will stimulate an increase in the production of collagen over a period of time. The result is visibly clearer which looks and feels fresh plump and firm.
